Peña-Melnyk goes it alone
Senatorial candidate passes on adding her to his slate

By Steven Overly
June 29, 2006

Diamondback Online (University of Maryland's Independent Student Newspaper)

College Park Councilwoman Joseline Peña-Melnyk was passed over by state senatorial candidate Jim Rosapepe last week as he and incumbent state Sen. John Giannetti announced their running slates for September's primary election.

Peña-Melnyk, one of the city's District 4 council members, is vying for a seat in the House of Delegates in the 21st district and was not named on either candidate's slate.

Her absence on both slates leaves a three-way race between the city's major candidates, with two relative unknowns facing off against one of the most vocal and active members of the city council. Peña-Melnyk's now independent campaign, however, could struggle over the next few months to gain traction without the benefit of standing in solidarity with incumbent legislators. Councilwoman to run for delegate
Peña-Melnyk is second council member to consider moving on

By Sam Hedenberg
March 15, 2006

Diamondback Online (University of Maryland's Independent Student Newspaper)

College Park Councilwoman Joseline Peña-Melnyk announced her intention to run for a seat in the Maryland House of Delegates at the City Council meeting last night, making her the second council member who has announced they may vacate their seat in the fall.

Peña-Melnyk, one of the city's District 4 councilwomen, said the decision came about "naturally" over time, but she only began seriously considering the move after an announcement by Del. Pauline Menes (D-Anne Arundel and Prince George's) last week that she would not seek re-election in the fall. (continued here...)

City councilwoman to run for Dist. 21

By Daniel Carter
March 23, 2006

Gazette.Net (Maryland Community Newpapers Online)

College Park City Councilwoman Joseline Peña-Melnyk (Dist. 4) announced Tuesday she will run for the empty seat left by longtime Del. Pauline Menes (D-Dist. 21) of College Park.

Menes, a delegate for almost 30 years, said she would not run for the seat this year, opening the door for two-term Councilwoman Peña-Melnyk.

''It's wonderful that the district is changing, so it's nice to have some diversity," she said. ''And I think I can provide that."

City Councilman Eric Olson (Dist. 3) said Peña-Melnyk's tireless work ethic would make her a solid candidate for the House of Delegates.

''Joseline works very hard and is very dedicated," Olson said. ''She has tremendous energy and a good sense of the community, and that will serve her well."

Peña-Melnyk's constant interaction with her constituents demonstrates her commitment to public service, Olson said.

''It's critical to know the needs of the community and I think she has a good handle on that," he said.

Peña-Melnyk, who said she would have supported Menes if she ran for another term, said her experience in College Park would prove invaluable come election time.
''I have developed great relationships with county and state leaders," she said. ''I think that [experience] will be a tremendous help."
